Classics Series: Common - Resurrection

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

First and foremost… this is my favorite album… my number 1… my golden moment in music history.

Common Sense – Resurrection

I think what grabbed me first about this album would be the most famous of underground hip hop songs, “I Used To Love H.E.R.”, the original anti-commercial rap record (also happens to be my favorite song EVER. The first time I heard this song I got chills.

The rest of the album in one word… FUN. You can tell common is truly in his element and having a great time making the music that he loves. The rhymes are spectacular for 1993 and the beats are timeless. I really have no bad things to say about the album. If you are only a recent fan of Common, you haven’t heard anything yet. This album is what hip hip should be, A good time. I could go on and on about this album but I’d rather let you all find it out for yourself. TRUST ME. You will enjoy it.

Book Review: Be Here Now by Dr. Richard Alpert (AKA Baba Ram Dass)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Dr. Richard Alpert, more affectionately known as Baba Ram Das, is one of Ken Kesey’s famed “Pranksters,” one of the pioneering groups of the hippie movement. To read more about them, check out The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (review forthcoming). But this book is split into three parts. The first is Alpert’s personal journey into the realm of enlightenment. He describes amazing, interesting, and at some points hilarious contact with beings who taught him either by tale or by trial. At one point, one of the monks he was studying with in India demanded that Alpert give him all of the LSD he had brought with him. In one fell swoop, the man swallowed ALL that Alpert had brought with him. And over the next few days, Alpert kept a close eye on the man, in order that he could help him should he overdose or freak out. But he never did. Furthermore, Alpert explains that it seemed as if NOTHING had happened to the man. He continued to practice his meditation and prayer, and Alpert continued to watch in disbelief.

The main part of the book comes next. This section is composed of about 70 pages of drawings and teachings by Ram Dass. Some of it gets VERY heady, but it is a very personal explanation that he is giving about his experiences on the quest for enlightenment. Some pages must have taken him hours to draw, as there are no formal text boxes or typewritten letter in the entire mini-book. It is profound, with a child-like wonder to it that draws you in and makes you realize that there truly is a path to happiness.

The last section is entitled “COOKBOOK FOR A SACRED LIFE”. In this part, Ram Das has created a textbook-like description of how to bring the perennial philosophy into the many aspects of your daily life. Detailed explanations of yoga postures and breathing exercises will help any true practitioner correctly place their mind in the right position as well as their body.

This is an amazing book. GET IT.

CDBABY

Any aspiring musician should have heard of CDBaby by now, and as an active user of their services, I highly recomend getting on it and begin selling your music. CDBaby is user friendly sell-it-yourself website that allows you to sell physical copies of your music as well as offers different digital deals to have your music available on Itunes, Napster, Rhapsody, etc. Understandably, many people are skeptical about the nature of this site and how friendly ther are to artists; let me dispell any preconceptions about this company, they are nothing but good. They allow you to set the price of your album and explain exactly in detail the amount the will be taking off the top, in addition they give you 91% of money earned via digital downloads. Keep in mind this is more than ANY other deal Ive ever heard of, major or indie label or solo. Not only do they easy access to their services and offer more than other companies which do the same thing, the people running it and the customer service you receive makes you want to do business with them and interact on regular basis. I can't think of one bad thing to say about the company, so again, if you are thinking about how to get your music out there, just sign up for CDBaby, they'll walk you through everything step by step and your music will be available worldwide immediately. No contracts, no bull, what else do you need?

Rigpa US

http://www.rigpa.org/Home.html

Rigpa, traditionally, is what Tibetans call the “true nature of mind.” It is the gap between each of our thoughts, that blessed non-thought experience of consciousness. More recently, Rigpa is a global network of like-minded individuals attempting to provide a place for spiritual development within the Buddhist framework. Rigpa is headed by Songyal Rinpoche, famed writer of The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. Geordie (drummer of Contraband), Joy Luv, and I had the chance to see him speak at Columbia University last week. Rinpoche is a light-hearted, spirited man, and he’s got jokes! You wouldn’t normally expect someone who is far along the path to enlightenment to have so many clever things to say, but au contraire mon frère. We had a great time listening to him speak on the nature of mind, and the jokes helped cement many of the arcane and complex ideas into my head.

You can access many things on the Rigpa website, not least of which is a catalog of lessons and teachings given by Rinpoche.

Enjoy, and bodhi svaha! (Hail enlightenment!)

Quote of the Day...

I was just shuffling through my many independent news websites when I came across this quote and couldn't help but post it to our blog immediately. It kinda slaps you in your face...

"If a country develops an economic system that is based on how to pay for the war, and if the amounts of fixed capital investment that are apparent are tied up in armaments, and if that country is a major exporter of arms, and its industrial fabric is dependent on them, then it would be in that country's interests to ensure that it always had a market. It is not an exaggeration to say that it is clearly in the interests of the world's leading arms exporters to make sure that there is always a war going on somewhere."

I think I saw this guy on a real random HBO documentary on graffiti artists. Regardless, I came across this guys website/blog/gallery. I personally think he is a dope artist, and as far as I can tell is open to work on just about anything. I highly recommend taking a look at his work. Most notably, he did animations in the video for Talib Kweli's single "Listen". I think this makes worthwhile enough to give a nod too. Let him know what you think. Well done Kofie

SOS: Save Our Souls

What’s the deal with hip-hop these days? Has it truly died?...

Can it be saved? Are you willing to help save it?...

This is Projectivity. Asking these questions about all aspects of society, not just music.

With music, specifically hip-hop, as our central focus we start off our mission concentrating on Hip-Hop.

From a recent conversation I had, in which I was discussing the fan base of The Higher Concept, how to expand it to its full potential, and who the best types of people to push our music and vision on, Tekst and myself realized that the majority of people interested in us do not listen to hip-hop music. In fact, many of them don’t like hip-hop at all. This brings up a very interesting question.

How can our music be enjoyed by so many non-hip-hoppers, when it can be defined as nothing else but hip-hop?

Sure we tag it as progressive hip-hop, underground hip-hop, and of course, music with a “higher concept”, but generally speaking it is still purely hip-hop music.

This brought us to start thinking about the term hip-hop or, more specific to our modern mainstream culture, rap music. These days our generation is home to two types of music listeners; those that have gotten caught up in the MTV/BET gangster youth culture they were raised on, and those who have come to reject the popular and everything the music now stands for. There is not much of a middle ground here.

So if we can make hip-hop music that the non-hip-hoppers enjoy, what does that say about the state of hip-hop. Have the images and ideas surrounding hip-hop changed so much that the hip-hop music that used to provide a middle ground, is no longer being made? Is this the reason for the lack of middle ground?

I believe that the people who claim to dislike hip-hop speak untruthfully, though they might not know it. These people generalize hip-hop, only considering what they hear on the radio to be hip-hop. These people see the way that the ghetto fabulous culture has infected America and cringe at the first sound of a rap beat. The mainstream has the idea behind the culture lost and it is almost impossible for those giving voice to the original design to be heard on a national level. If the majority of America knew more about the genre’s within the genre they would be less quick to immediately turn off a rap track.

All im really tryna say is, if you are one of these people who are anti-hip-hop music, don’t judge the book by its radio-edited cover. Dig deep into the underground realms of this music. Learn about the origin and the culture. The train bombings, The block parties, The break dance battles. The Public Enemy’s and The KRS-One’s. Learn about a counterculture that was born out of a need for positive change and swallowed by commercialization. Learn about the MC’s out there making music with a purpose, a meaning, and most importantly a passion… What you find may surprise you.

Once you reach this enlightenment hit us up…Get involved… Lets remind the world that hip hop is a culture. This is Projectivity.

Spotlight: Tainted Blue

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The first Monday of every month, our friend Paul and his friends put on a show in Tainted Blue Studios, a penthouse studio above Quad Studios in Times Square. It's a showcase of sorts, but with a twist. Each band/group performs a few tracks in the million dollar studio, mic'd up to perfection in the sound stage, but the twist is that there are about 20 chairs in the studio as well. So it becomes an unplugged set! THC had a show there December 1st, and we are introducing for the first time our new band, THE CONTRABAND. You will be getting to know them better in the coming days, but suffice to say that all your favorite THC jams are coming to LIFE! Mwahahaha!

OK, back to Tainted Blue. After you make your way into the city, up the specially-designed elevator maze, and pay $10 to Paul at the door, you may experience the great night of music that this event inevitably becomes. YOU ARE WELCOME.

Spotlight: Sophistafunk

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Sophistafunk, Aristorap! That about sums up the group composed of Keyboardist Adam Gold, Drummer Eman Washington, and Emcee Jack Brown. I (Matty J) used to be an emcee in the group as well, but have since moved out of Syracuse down to the Big Apple. Sophistafunk, however, has not slowed down one bit. On the contrary, they have been making slow but steady progress up in Syracuse and the Central NY area. They play every Tuesday at Funk N Waffles, a coffee shop owned by Adam Gold. They have recently caught the attention of Marshall Street Records, a label owned by the University, who want to produce an album for the band. They are currently in the process of refining and recording their songs, so be on the lookout for an EP soon!

Wild Style: The Movie!!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I really cant put into words the value this movie holds in the expansion of hip-hop music the world. Featuring all the biggest stars at that time from rappers and DJs such as Busy Bee, Cold Crush Brothers, Double Trouble, Furious 5, GrandMaster Flash, as well as the original breakers the Roc Steady Crew. Its a classic hip-hop story following the tale of a graffiti writer disconnected from his goals and dreams as an artist that thrives on the thrill of painting subways cars in a time where the art was being commercialized and profitted from. As I said, I really cant sum up the importance of this movie, just wanted to write about it for anyone that has not seen. Go check it out ASAP. Other notable graff movies include Style Wars and Beat Street.

Spotlight: JDV

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The one and only Julien Vogel! Don't worry, you really should have no idea who this guy is but you will. If you've been doing your THC research or been paying attention to the contest on the website (see thehigherconcept.com/downloads) then you know about the classic sounds of JDV beats. We found this guy online with really hot beats, from Canada. The sound is nothing else but classic. He had one simple rule: record a song in 4 weeks from when you get the beat, or its not your beat anymore. Simple enough. THC took on the task, and out came "94 Style", a tribute to the classics of our generation. We loved the production so much from this guy that we are now 3 songs deep including the another song available on the myspace "That's Right". His hits on myspace are steadily growing and he is collabing with all different artists. THC will be lucky if we get an album together with him while he is blowing up, so make sure you hit him up and tell him you're feeling the THC joints we have done with him.

Last year, for a short time, NBC and Universal put their TV shows on iTunes. When they couldn't come to an agreement about the price of the shows, NBC took all of their shows off of iTunes and created a new site. Enter hulu. Hulu is a free site with TV shows, movies, and more. They have old shows like "Wierd Science" and they also have the new episodes of The Office and such the day after they air. So go and watch TV, you desk chair potatoes.

Review: Strange Kidz - Kidz Album

CLICK HERE TO GET THIS ALBUM!

Well, first of all, I (and most probably you if you are reading this) am NOT this album's target audience. The Strange Kidz are looking to reach those youngings who are impressionable and new to the world. This will undoubtedly open them up to all sorts of creative thoughts and dance sessions. This is an updated version of my favorite music as i was a kid, Raffe (spelling?). With silly song topics, wildly tight transitions and perfectly placed vocals, I was pleasently suprised to find myself actually LISTENING to this album!

flow - as good as the bath water down the drain
lyrical content - as funny as Shrek
production - it makes me wanna DANCE!
album-ness - start it from the begining again, Mom!
overall - oshkosh begosh, of course!

CHECK OUT THE ALBUM HERE!

ALBUM REVIEW INTRODUCTION

all of the ratings will be out of a 5 point system. obviously we won't be rating horrible albums, so all of the albums SHOULD be in the upper range, but who knows, one of us could be having a bad day when we do the review. BUT DON'T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT!

flow - is how the emcees ride the beat and what their cadence is. this may also include evaluation on the emcees' voice and tone.
lyrical content - is what the rappers are ACTUALLY SAYING. we know that nobody listens to anything but the beat nowadays, but bear with us.
production - is the quality of the beats and other musical content on the album. thank god for 9th!
album-ness - how all the songs are cohesively arranged on the album and the overall feel of the album.
overall - self-explanatory.
